Explanation of the Essays on "Your Favorite Possession"

Mr. Kendall asked his English I students to choose their favorite objects and write a paragraph or two, explaining why the objects were so valuable to them.

We were inspired partly by the scene in J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, when Stradlater asks Holden to write a descriptive essay for him. ("Just write about something . . . make it as descriptive as hell"). You may recall, Holden describes his brother Allie's baseball glove, with the poems written on it in green ink, so Allie could read them when he was bored, standing in the outfield.
