Bubble Gum in a Can

Matthew Gladstone

Surprisingly, there was a weird taste in my drink and I discovered there was bubble gum in it. All of a sudden, I screamed "Who put this gum in my drink?" Mr. Lamb, my math teacher, looks at me with a weird countenance and starts laughing along with everybody else because of this absurd outrage. He stated "What happened Matt; you of all people are chewing gum in my classroom? Here is a demerit: Don't forget to pick it up when you leave class." There was some misunderstanding in the room because Mr. Lamb knew that I do not even like the taste of bubble gum. Meanwhile, Mr. Lamb goes back to teaching the class more algebra and there are still classmates talking and chuckling in the corner of the classroom about who put the gum in my drink.

At the end of the school day, Mrs. Gooen called me into her office and stated "Hey Matt, I hear that you were chewing gum in Mr. Lamb's classroom. You know that you are not supposed to be chewing gum in school, so why were you?" This was the ending of a very joyful day at school. In answering her question, I stated "I was not the person who was chewing gum. I was finishing my lunch meal in Mr. Lamb's classroom and I had discovered bubble gum in my drink and I asked the whole class who put the gum in the can, however, nobody answered. I do not even like bubble gum; however, Mr. Lamb must have misunderstood the situation." She asked me who I thought would put gum in my drink and I had no answer. I stated, "Well, it definitely cannot be Mr. Lamb because teachers are not supposed to pull pranks on students and he was teaching the whole time. I believed that it was one of my classmates in the corner across the room because those kids were laughing really loud when I had noticed the gum. I figured that one of them knew about it."

After fifteen minutes of talking with the vice principal, I finally went home to get some homework done. On the ride home my brother Adam asked me what was wrong and I told him that one of my classmates put gum in my drink in class today and I cannot figure out who had done it. He stated "GROW UP." He really had surprised me with his reaction because I had expected some sympathy. He told me "I will help you find out who did it. He asked me who I thought did not do it, who are the possible suspects, and who likes chewing gum in general. I stated "Well, Dan, John, Jamie, and Tom were sitting with me on one side of the classroom while Kelly, Lauren, Leeann, and Ashley were sitting across from us. I knew that Dan did not do it because the gum he chewed was in his mouth while Mr. Lamb was teaching everybody. John put his gum under the desk since Mr. Lamb did not allow him to move at all during class. And Jamie never chewed gum. However, Tom was a rather suspicious classmate because he had a pack of gum hanging out of his backpack and was always quite during class, and he never caused trouble. He only laughed at the random jokes people told." He thought I had it all figured out; therefore, he ignored me and went back to listening to the music on his iPod.

I continued to solve my own mystery and thought of which one of the girls had done it. There are some pretty mischievous girls in my class who love pulling pranks on their friends. Lauren found this incident hilarious but I knew that she had not put the gum in my can because Mr. Lamb caught her chewing bubble gum walking into class and made her put it in the garbage. Leeann was no longer a suspect either because she sat in front of me and she only got up from her desk to get a tissue and I saw her every move. Ashley was not a suspect because she never talked to anybody in class except for Mr. Lamb. Then I had overheard Lauren and Kelly talking about gum and a can. Two seconds later she got up to go to the bathroom. Right after Mr. Lamb stated "Hey, Matt, pay attention." I looked down into my can and saw the gum. That was when I screamed about finding somebody's gum in my can. When I got home, I discovered that Kelly had dropped gum in my can when she got up to go to the bathroom. She had left me no choice at that moment to be suspicious of everybody else except her because she had already left the room. Kelly must have dropped the gum in my drink on the way out as she passed by me when I was not looking.
