Rutgers Preparatory School needs charitable gifts to maintain the
high quality of programs and offer new opportunities for our students
and faculty. Although it is the oldest independent school in New Jersey,
when RPS separated from Rutgers University in 1957, the university retained
all of the assets accumulated over almost 200 years. Tuition
covers only about 86% of the cost of educating each student this year and RPS has a modest endowment.

As
an Independent School, RPS receives no government funds for our
campus facilities. To renovate and improve existing structures or
create new buildings we must rely on gifts!
- In 1983 $3,500,000 was borrowed to create the Upper School after
a disastrous fire, a debt which will not be repaid until the year
2014.
- Between 1988 and 2005 our community has invested over $6,000,000
in improved facilities, including the Kaufelt Fine Arts Center,
Silverman Library/Technology Center, second gymnasium, Music Building,
Multi-purpose Barn, Heinlein Classrooms Wing, and renovations
to the Elm Farm Building.
We continue to seek major gifts to complete the
Campus Master Plan. In the next few years we hope to add:
- Eight Upper School classrooms
- A 400 seat theater building including a new cafeteria and bookstore
- An additional athletic field
- An expanded system of roads and parking

There can be tremendous tax advantages when you
give to Rutgers Prep. A Gift of appreciated stock can free
up assets and save capital gains taxes. Planned gifts offer exciting
opportunities. Most importantly you will have the satisfaction of helping
our students and faculty continue traditions of service, scholarship
and achievement which have existed even longer than the United States
itself. For more information, please contact RPS Director of Development
Jim Ackerman at (732) 545-5600, ext. 237.

Annual Giving is the foundation
on which all of Rutgers Prep's fundraising efforts are built. We
need everyone to participate as this encourages gifts from
major donors, corporations and foundations. Materials about the
Annual Fund are sent out on October 1st.
- Gifts are usually tax deductible if you
itemize
- Parents, alumni, grandparents and alumni
parents are asked to participate.
- Pledges should be fulfilled by June 1st.
- Many companies will match employee's gifts.
- Gifts for Annual Giving range from $5
to $10,000. The average gift from parents is just under $500 and
about $250 from alumni.

We need every RPS family to participate according to their means in our
fundraising efforts. All of the facilities and programs here now exist
because of the generosity of those who supported the School in previous
years. It is our responsibility to preserve and extend this legacy to
the families which will follow us.

Planned gifts allow you to make an impact on the School's
future and often provide substantial tax savings. This type of gift
may increase your disposable income, enhance retirement income and/or
protect your family from estate taxes. These gifts often
produce impressive benefits for the donor. You can:
- Give appreciated stock.
- Use an insurance policy to leverage your gift.
- Arrange a bequest as part of your estate.
- Create a Lead Trust to help the School and pass assets to your
children/grandchildren
- Increase your income and endow a school program through a Remainder
Trust.
- Give RPS real estate, art, or another valuable asset while creating
substantial tax savings.
