Academic Summer School

For families enrolling more than one child in Summer School Classes, each child will receive a $100 reduction.

Elementary and Middle School Courses

Parents, please check with your child’s current teacher or guidance counselor to ensure that you are enrolling them in the proper level class. Elementary and Middle School courses are offered for non-credit, enrichment only. Grades are not reported on report cards. For safety reasons, our classes cannot accommodate students who are new to, or visiting the country and cannot speak or understand the English language.

Writing / Math  

Writing Courses

Writing Workshop 3, 4 and 5
Entering grades 3-5                   
June 27 – July 29
7:45 – 10:15 or 10:30 – 1:00

Students will examine and discuss various types of writing.Topics may include nonfiction,personal narrative, persuasive essays, poetry, and narrative fiction stories. Students will study these genres through reading, listening and discussing works by various authors and by creating their own written work. Students will share, receive and return constructive criticism on how to improve their writing. Students will also use the computer lab to strengthen their writing, word processing and editing skills. Class size is limited to 12 students who are grouped by age, not skill level. Thecourse is designed so that each student can work at their own ability level and reach their individual potential.

Writing Workshop 6, 7 and 8
Entering grades 6-8
June 27 – July 29
7:45 – 10:15 or 10:30 – 1:00

Children will participate in various writing exercises including poetry, persuasive essays, non-fiction and fiction story writing. The students will use computer word processing to create a cooperative literary magazine or individual portfolio. Class size is limited to 12 students. This course is designed to work on strengthening grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and writing skills. The course is designed so that each student can work at their own ability level and thus reach their own individual potential. 

Tuition: $1095 plus books and materials

 

Math Courses

Arithmetic Workshop
Entering grades 3 through 6
June 27 – July 29
7:45 – 10:15 or 10:30-1:00

This course covers math skills associated with grades 3-6. The course provides small classes in which experienced teachers focus on the development of specific arithmetic skills and concepts. The course presentation includes, but is not limited to, whole-class discussion, cooperative learning, individualized instruction, and games to reinforce skills. The program is designed and carried out on the basis of individual diagnostic test results. Parents are encouraged to bring in reports and recommendations from the student’s arithmetic teacher. Students will be grouped in small classes based on age and/or ability level. Class size averages between 6 and 9 students. Please check with your child’s current math teacher or guidance counselor to ensure that you are registering for the proper class.

Pre-Algebra Workshop
Entering grades 6 – 8
June 27 – July 29
7:45 – 10:15 or 10:30 – 1:00

This course offers basic operations with integers and signed rational numbers, the decimal system, expressions, equations, graphs, inequalities, geometric concepts, statistics, probability, ratios, proportions, percents, square roots, area, volume, formulas and problem solving. A diagnostic test will be given on the first day of class to help determine proper placement of students and highlight areas of needed attention. The course presentation includes, but is not limited to, whole-class discussion, cooperative learning, individualized instruction, and games to reinforce skills. This is an enrichment program and is not intended to replace a year long Pre-Algebra class. Class size averages between 6 and 9 students who work at their own speed and ability levels, and thus may take more than one summer to complete the entire course offering. Please check with your child’s current math teacher or guidance counselor to ensure that you are registering for the proper class.

Algebra Workshop
Entering grades 6 – 9
June 27 – July 29
7:45 – 10:15 or 10:30 – 1:00

This course is designed to introduce key concepts to students who wish to prepare and/or enrich their knowledge of Algebra. Topics include functions, rational and irrational numbers, graphing, polynomials and problem solving. A diagnostic test will be given on the first day of class to help determine proper placement of students and highlight areas of needed attention. The course presentation includes, but is not limited to, whole-class discussion, cooperative learning, individualized instruction, and games to reinforce skills. This is an enrichment program and is not intended to replace a year long Algebra class. Class size averages between 6 and 9 students who work at their own speed and ability levels, and thus may take more than one summer to complete the entire course offering. Please check with your child’s current math teacher or guidance counselor to ensure that you are registering for the proper class. Participants should have completed a Pre-Algebra class at their own school or during a prior summer session. Students must supply their own calculators.

Geometry Workshop 
Entering grades 6 – 9
June 27 – July 29 
7:45 – 10:15 or 10:30 - 1:00

This course is designed for students who wish to enrich their knowledge of Geometry as they do step-by-step constructions. Topics may include lines, segments, circles, perpendiculars, polygons, chords and tangents. The course presentation includes, but is not limited to, whole-class discussion, cooperative learning, individualized instruction, and games to reinforce skills. This is an enrichment program and is not intended to replace a year long Geometry class. Class size averages between 6 and 9 students who will work at their own speed and ability levels. A diagnostic test will be given on the first day of class to help determine proper placement of students and highlight areas of needed attention. Participants should have completed an Algebra class at their own school or during a prior summer session
