Levi Strauss, a German immigrant, invented jeans. He originally came to the San Francisco searching for gold-diggers to sell canvas tents too. Many people came to him asking for pants, and not tents. They wanted durable pants so they could go digging for gold. So, instead of using the canvas to make tents, he decided to make a pair of pants called jeans, and to start a company called Levis.
