Jet Engines

The jet engine was first invented by two sides during the Second World War. The Germans and the British. The invention of the jet engine was accredited to both Sir Frank Whittle and Hans Von Ohain. However, the idea was first created by Frank Whittle. The difference between the two was that the Nazi government pressured Hans unlike the British government which thought that it was a waste of time and money. However, despite no support from the British government, Frank Whittle kept working on his jet engine. In the end, the Germans built the first jet plane, the Heinkel 178. These fighters/bombers were used in actual battle. But, the tied of war had changed and the development of the jet engine to late to help any side in the war. The jet engine uses a basic idea to create power. It does this by taking in air, then mixing in a gas. Then compressing and igniting the mixture and because of the heat, the gases will expand, and being pushed through a smaller hole than the entrance hole, pushes the aircraft. Unlike the first airplane engine, the piston engine. The piston will use propellers to push and pull air, the jet engine does use a type of propeller, but it is to take in air. You may think there is only one type of jet engines, but you are wrong. There are several types. Each on different from the other. One of them is the Turbojet. The turbojet was the first type of jet engine to be used. It is the most common and all other engines are modeled similar to this one. It is interesting because it can change the shape of its inlet duct to help decrease the amount of energy loss created when the plane goes supersonic. Another type is the Turboprop. The turboprop is similar to the turbojet but it uses all of its energy to push propellers which move the aircraft. Another type is the turbofan. The turbofan is really a turbojet that except it has another large propeller. The next type is the ramjet. It is the simplest in design and it is really a turbojet without a turbine or compressor. Today, the jet engine is one of our most important assets. It powers our jet fighters and bombers which protect us at a moments notice. It powers the large aircraft that carry us to anywhere in the world in only a few hours. It has created a whole new science and market. Without it, we probably wouldn't be this far in technology.
