College Counseling
The College Counseling team at Rutgers Prep empowers students to drive their own future. We support students’ goals while challenging them to build the life skills needed for success. RPS students are encouraged to pursue their college process through identifying strong academic and extracurricular interests while remaining aware of their individual needs as learners and community members who are entering young adulthood.

Introduction
The RPS College Counseling team is excited to partner with students and families in the college process. As decades of Rutgers Prep graduates can attest, Rutgers Prep college counselors provide caring and comprehensive assistance to students in identifying colleges and universities that match their accomplishments, interests, and aspirations to create applications that showcase their strengths. Students and their families are encouraged to take a three-pronged approach to this process: academic fit, social-emotional fit and financial-fit.
Program Overview
Beginning with educational programming starting in middle school with students and families, our highly individualized approach encourages students to be thoughtfully engaged in their high school experience, enabling them to make educated choices as they pursue the college search process. We are dedicated to connecting with college admissions offices, college counseling colleagues and our local and national organizations to stay current in an ever-changing admissions landscape. We maintain close relationships with colleges through visiting campuses, meeting with representatives in admissions offices, and networking at conferences. We also host college visits at Rutgers Prep; last year, more than 130 admissions representatives came to see us and share information with interested students. Most importantly, we regularly remind them of all that our amazing RPS students will bring to their campuses.
One hundred percent of our graduates go on to attend a four-year college, and their choices are reflective of their strong academic and real-world preparation. We believe that the college process is an opportunity for our students to identify and grow their interests in and outside of the classroom, develop organization and time management skills, and develop independence and autonomy needed for college and beyond.
Individualized Support
We are fully aware that the demands of high school and the college planning process can be challenging to balance. As college counselors, we are available to support our students in a myriad of ways. Through individual meetings beginning in 10th grade and seminar courses beginning in 11th, our students discover ways to work through difficult emotions during what is an exciting, but sometimes overwhelming, time in life. Learning breathing techniques and self-compassion strategies while developing a resilient mindset prepares students to ride the waves that come up in high school and to navigate their college journey successfully.
