Tuition & Value
What is the value of a Rutgers Prep education?
Investing in an independent school education is a big decision. But when you choose to join the Rutgers Prep community, you are not the only one making an investment in your child’s future.
Our teachers prepare their students to be nimble and well-adapted learners in an ever-changing academic landscape, setting them up for success in college and career. Our coaches create opportunities for leadership, resilience, strength, and character development – both on and off the field. Our students and their families support each other, celebrate each other, and build lifelong bonds with one another; bonds that extend far beyond the confines of the school day and our campus.
During the most important, formative years of your child’s life, a Rutgers Prep education is invaluable.
What is included in tuition?
At Rutgers Prep, we strive for transparency in our tuition structure. At other schools, tuition only covers the portion of a student’s day when they attend classes. We recognize that our academic schedule rarely aligns perfectly with parents’ personal and professional obligations, and seek to create comfort and convenience for the members of our community. So what, in addition to a world-class education, is included in tuition?
Lunch Just Got Better
At Rutgers Prep, lunch is baked in the rate of tuition for grades 1-12, not served on the side. With food service starting in first grade, our students look forward to lunch, because we partner with SAGE Dining to bring locally sourced food cooked from scratch. Healthy, delicious, and abundant options ensure that our students enjoy access to the nutrition they need to fuel their studies. Kosher? Vegetarian? Halal? Vegan? Gluten free? No problem.

Investing in a Rutgers Prep education is a major commitment on the part of the family and should be given thoughtful consideration. Any family may request information regarding financial aid. Rutgers Preparatory School’s financial aid program enables the school to assist qualified students whose families could not otherwise afford an independent school education. Financial aid is awarded and reviewed annually, and is based on demonstrated financial need. Through this approach, Rutgers Prep is able to enroll a diverse and exciting student body.
Financial aid is awarded on the basis of need, which is the difference between a family’s resources and the school’s tuition fee. Rutgers Prep follows the guidelines established by the TADS Financial Aid Assessment System, an organization that provides schools with sound information to help make financial aid awards fairly and equitably on the basis of need. All families who feel they may qualify are encouraged to apply for aid by filing an application with TADS and submitting copies of the previous years' Income Tax information. Rutgers Prep offers no scholarships or awards to students based strictly on academic, artistic, or athletic talent. Financial aid decisions rest with the Financial Aid Committee.
Financial aid decisions are made independently of other school functions and do not adversely affect a student’s chances for admission or continuation at the school. While the financial aid decision and admission decision are independent of one another, applications for financial aid will not be addressed until after a student’s application for admission has been considered. It is therefore important for families to meet certain deadlines when applying for financial aid. Please note that a family submitting a late or incomplete application for financial aid is in jeopardy of excluding itself from aid for that year.
Rutgers Preparatory School seeks to have candid and transparent partnerships with our parents. We realize that investing in a Rutgers Prep education is a major commitment on the part of any family. At all times we seek to “inspire students to discover and pursue their passions, embrace intellectual curiosity and creativity, and lead with confidence.” There is a cost to provide this inspiration.
The annual assessment of tuition is a necessity in order to offer our programs to our students, but tuition income alone is not sufficient to run our programs. Since income from tuition accounts for less than the cost of operating the School, every effort is made to maximize income from other sources including Educational Partnerships, Summer Programs and Facility Rentals. Additionally, every effort is made to balance expenses while continuing to offer our extraordinary programs within a culture that is unpretentious.
Why are there increasing tuition levels?
The cost to provide programs increases from the opening grades of Pre-Kindergarten, Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten as students transition to a more academically focused curriculum in the Lower School, and our tuition philosophy is structured accordingly. The cost increases when specialized teachers are added to the student’s academic day, and again for grades 8-12 when the college guidance and counseling process begins.
Why do tuitions increase each year?
Parents can anticipate a modest annual increase based upon the Consumer Price Index plus approximately 2-3% since the School’s expenses grow to cover increases in the cost of repair and replacement, upgrades to facilities and services, curriculum expansion, academic equipment, and faculty professional development.
We do everything possible to offer prudent strategic budgets, looking to find innovative and creative ways to continue to offer a first-class/world class education provided by excellent teachers to a student body of engaged, focused, talented, and determined pupils.
