She Kills Monsters
by Qui Nguyen
All Agnes Evans has left of Tilly after her younger sister’s death is a notebook containing the plans for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign Tilly authored. Despite being way out of her element as a cheerleader among geeks, Agnes decides to play the game and finds herself on an action-packed adventure alongside her sister’s alter ego, Tillius the Paladin. Encounters with Bugbears, demons, and evil succubi teach Agnes not only about the game Tilly loved but about her sister’s real-life challenges, which included being bullied for her friendships and sexuality. Replete with 90’s pop cultural references, this fast-paced dramatic comedy adventure asks us to consider the limits and possibilities of the roles we assume in life and play. NOTE: Although this play is one of the most popular shows produced in high schools, it is best-suited to audiences over 13. It includes comic violence, innuendo, and scenes of bullying which include invective.
