Eighth Graders “Build” a Better Understanding of the Civil War
Corey Cheung’s Reconstruction & Reform students got a small taste of life as a Civil War soldier this week, building their own tents outside the Middle School.
In groups, they followed a soldier’s tent-building guide provided by “Corporal Cheung” and put their tarps, stakes, rope and makeshift tools to work. The shelters they made were fairly sturdy, and some students even climbed inside to test out their new accommodations.
Their hard work was rewarded with a piece of homemade hardtack prepared by Mr. Cheung. The simple, rock-hard cracker was a staple ration during the Civil War.
This hands-on activity helps students see the Civil War as more than a series of battles and dates and to recognize the human side of the conflict.
