Turning Fear into Fearless: A Conversation with Darryl Bellamy
Fear is one of the most common emotions students experience, but it doesn’t have to hold them back. In this second episode in the podcast series, hosts Sue Marotto, Director of Health and Wellness, and Sherry Riggi, Assistant Director of Health and Wellness, welcome Darryl Bellamy, an international speaker and author, to discuss how young people can acknowledge fear, embrace it, and take action anyway.
Bellamy has read thousands of anonymous student fears and discovered something profound: students don’t fear failure as much as they fear regret. His work focuses on helping students, parents, and educators create spaces where fear is not avoided but understood—and even celebrated.
During his visit to Rutgers Prep this fall, Bellamy met with Upper and Middle School students and Peer Leaders to talk about strategies for facing fear with confidence. In the podcast, he shares his "Trace, Embrace, Grace" framework:
- Trace – Identify and express the fear
- Embrace – Take action, even if you’re afraid
- Grace – Show kindness and forgiveness to yourself in the process
The episode also explores how parents can support their children in facing fear, from modeling vulnerability to celebrating moments of courage.
