Joe Alterman Jazz Trio Plays at Second Annual Krish Kohli Music Series
Rutgers Prep hosted the second annual Krish Kohli Music Series on Friday, May 10, in the RPS Music Building. The evening featured an exclusive performance by a jazz trio headed by acclaimed jazz pianist Joe Alterman.
Alterman was joined on stage by talented musicians Nathaniel Schroder on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. The group played a varied setlist, including Joe's own takes on jazz classics and some of his original pieces like the title track from his 2021 album "The Upside of Down."
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Alterman studied music at New York University, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Jazz Piano Performance. He has performed at renowned venues such as the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and New York’s Blue Note.
In the lead-up to the concert, Alterman spent several days on campus working with RPS music students, sharing his knowledge and leading conversations on the music that inspires them.
The Krish Kohli Music Series is an annual program that brings in world-class musicians to perform for and work with our community. Krish Kohli '20 was a student who contributed immeasurably to the music program at RPS and the musical life of the school, including playing in Sax Ensemble, participating in Tri-M, teaching younger students, and co-founding and co-directing the Fusion Ensemble, a student-run performing group that brought together students from multiple groups to find more opportunities to play together. This music series allows Krish's legacy in the Music Department to live on.
Special thanks to the Kohli family for their support and to everyone involved in organizing this memorable event.
