Molecular Biology Students Use Kean University Lab for Research Projects

On Thursday, March 5, five students from Erica Wleklinski's Advanced Student Research in Molecular Biology course traveled to Kean University to use specialized analytical equipment in support of their independent research projects.

Eshaan Radhakrishnan ’26, Eehan Saqib ’26, and AJ Pagano ’26 used a plate reader to conduct an enzymatic assay measuring the amount of carbonic anhydrase in their experimental samples. Meanwhile, Keran Chen ’26 and Mimansa Kumar ’26 worked alongside a faculty advisor, Dr. Swinton, to perform LC-MS (liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry) analysis, examining the metabolites present in different duckweed samples.

The experience allowed the students to apply advanced analytical techniques typically used in professional research laboratories. They will present their findings at the 71st annual meeting of the New Jersey Academy of Science (NJAS) on April 11.
