RPS Kindergarten Explores Literacy and Technology with AI-Generated Picture Stories

Our Kindergarten students have been learning about the building blocks of reading comprehension, including parts of speech and story elements like characters and setting. To reinforce these lessons, they used DALL-E (an AI tool that generates images based on textual descriptions) to create picture stories using prompts given by the students.

Starting in smaller groups of 3-4, each student would give one part of the prompt to create the picture – one student would say a character, one would provide an adjective, and another would come up with a verb. As they got more comfortable with the technology, their "stories" got more complex.

Thanks to the guidance of Dr. Merges, our students got an exciting taste of AI and learned how to use technology to enhance their storytelling skills. It was a fantastic experience, combining traditional literacy lessons with 21st-century tools. Want to try at home? Dr. Merges recommends adding words like "cartoon" or "for young kids" when creating your pictures.

Check out some of our students' amazing creations, and see if you can guess what words were used to create the second set of images!
