Sports Analytics Club Gets Assist from Hockey Data Expert Jesse McNulty

On February 6, the Sports Analytics Club held a Zoom call with guest speaker Jesse McNulty, a math teacher from Delaware, who previously coached the University of Delaware women’s ice hockey team and worked in hockey analytics for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

McNulty helped the students start preparing for UPenn's Wharton High School Data Science Competition. This year’s competition will feature a simulated hockey league, and students will be challenged to analyze league data and make strategic, data-driven decisions.

Our guest shared his expertise in hockey and lacrosse analytics, introducing students to key hockey statistics they will use in the competition. McNulty is also widely recognized as a pioneer in lacrosse analytics, having been one of the first to apply rigorous data analysis to the sport. He was also formerly affiliated with the Atlanta Blaze of Major League Lacrosse (MLL).

Thank you to Mr. McNulty for giving our students valuable insight into real-world sports analytics and providing them with a strong foundation as they prepare for the upcoming Wharton competition.
