Upper School Students Teach Second Grade All about Lunar New Year
Seniors Kelli Chang ’25, Alex Jaakobs ’25, and Avery Minion ’25, all students in You Zhou’s Chinese Honors Chinese 5 class, paid a visit to Ana Arias’ 2nd Grade Spanish class to give a presentation on Lunar New Year.
They taught the second graders about the traditions of the holiday, including the significance of the Year of the Snake, how the Lunar New Year is celebrated in China, and customs such as the dragon and lion dances, house cleaning, and the giving of lucky money .
For a hands-on activity, the students worked together on a fun craft project, creating a large dragon for the classroom wall. Each second grader traced and cut out their handprint, which was then used as a colorful scale for the dragon.
